Questions, answered

Who is hormone optimization for?

Adults who have symptoms that may be related to hormone changes, such as perimenopause, menopause or low testosterone. A provider decides whether treatment is appropriate.

What hormones do you treat?

[PLACEHOLDER: list the therapies your providers prescribe, e.g. estradiol, progesterone, testosterone.]

Are bioidentical or compounded hormones safer?

Not necessarily. Compounded hormones are not FDA-approved, and the FDA has not evaluated them for safety, effectiveness or quality. Your provider can explain the options.

Do I need labs?

Yes. Labs help your provider understand your starting point and monitor your treatment safely.

Important safety information

This is not a complete list of risks. Talk to your provider about your full medical history before starting treatment. Call 911 for a medical emergency.

Estrogen and progestin therapy

  • Using estrogen alone may increase the risk of endometrial (uterine) cancer in women with a uterus. Adding a progestin lowers this risk. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding right away.
  • Estrogen with or without progestin may increase the risk of stroke, blood clots, heart attack, breast cancer and dementia. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
  • Do not use if you have had breast cancer, blood clots, stroke, liver disease, unexplained vaginal bleeding or are pregnant.

Testosterone

  • Testosterone can increase red blood cell count and blood pressure and may affect fertility. See the testosterone safety information for more.

Common side effects

  • Breast tenderness, bloating, headache, nausea, spotting, mood changes and skin reactions at the application site.
