Questions, answered

What treatments do you offer?

[PLACEHOLDER: list your formulary, e.g. oral or topical finasteride and minoxidil.] A provider decides what is appropriate for you.

How long until I see results?

Hair grows slowly, so it often takes several months of consistent use to see a change. Results vary, and some people do not respond.

What happens if I stop?

Hair loss treatments generally work only while you use them. If you stop, hair loss can resume.

Is this for women too?

[PLACEHOLDER: confirm whether your providers treat women for hair loss and with which medications.] Finasteride is not for women who are or may become pregnant.

Important safety information

This is not a complete list of risks. Talk to your provider about your full medical history before starting treatment. Call 911 for a medical emergency.

Finasteride

  • Not for use by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. Women should not handle crushed or broken tablets or topical finasteride, as it can harm a male fetus.
  • May cause sexual side effects, such as decreased sex drive, erection problems or ejaculation problems, which in rare cases may continue after stopping.
  • May cause mood changes, including depression and, rarely, thoughts of self-harm. Tell your provider right away about any mood changes.
  • Can lower PSA test results. Tell any provider ordering a PSA test that you take finasteride.

Minoxidil

  • Topical minoxidil may cause scalp irritation, itching, dryness or unwanted facial hair growth.
  • Oral minoxidil may cause dizziness, fast heartbeat, swelling of the hands or feet, or unwanted hair growth. Tell your provider about any heart conditions or blood pressure medication.
  • Temporary shedding can occur in the first weeks of treatment.
