What your BMI means
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight
- 25 to 29.9: overweight
- 30 or higher: obesity
BMI is one of several measures providers use to understand weight-related health risk. Waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and family history all add to the picture. If you have questions about your weight, talk to a healthcare provider.
Thinking about weight loss treatment?

Common questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For most adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is considered a healthy weight range. 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and 30 or higher is in the obesity range.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly or account for muscle mass, age, sex or ethnicity, so a very muscular person can have a high BMI without excess fat.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. In US units, it is 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².
Does BMI work for children?
No. For children and teens, BMI is interpreted using age- and sex-specific percentiles. This calculator is for adults 20 and older.
